Created for a Purpose

After the first five days of creation, God saw that "it was good" (Genesis1:21). And after his creation of mankind on the sixth day, he saw that "it was very good" (verse 31). That's because God created human beings in his image. We have the capacity to think, feel, express ourselves and relate to him. This is the distinguishing characteristic that raises us above anything else God made. It gives us inherent and infinite value. This is where we find our sense of worth. In the beginning, God created us in his image specifically for fellowship with him. If we don't make that our primary purpose, life will be empty and unfulfilling. If we do, we will fulfill the purpose for which we were designed.
ON THE THIRD DAY
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
"For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures"
(1 Corinthians 15:3-4, NIV)
TODAY’S WORD
As we celebrate the resurrection of Christ, I think about when they crucified Jesus. On that Friday, it was the darkest, most painful, discouraging day of His life. In fact, it was so bad that He sweat drops of blood. It looked as if His enemies had gotten the best of Him. But God had other plans. They put Him in the grave on Friday, celebrating their victory, but Sunday morning it was a different story. The grave could not hold Him! Death couldn't contain Him! The forces of darkness couldn't stop Him! On the third day, He came out of the grave and said, "I was dead, but now I am alive forevermore!"
One principle that the resurrection teaches us is that God will always finish what He started. No matter how dark it looks, no matter how long it's been, no matter how many people are trying to push you down; if you will stay in faith, God will always take you from Friday to Sunday. He will always complete what He started in you!
A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father God, thank You for completing what You started in my life. I trust that no matter how dark things may seem, You are my shining light of hope. I thank You for working behind the scenes to carry me through to the place of victory in every area of my life in Jesus' name. Amen.

Costly Mistakes

As I was recently reading through 1 Samuel, my favorite book of the Bible, I was gripped by the run-in David had with Nabal (1 Samuel 25). David and his men were camped in a desert where Nabal was shearing his sheep. So he sent a message to Nabal, reminding him of how he had generously protected his shepherds in the past and did not steal anything from them. In return, David asked Nabal to give him and his men whatever supplies he could spare (vv.8-9).
Nabal was a “crude and mean” man who cared only about himself (v.3). When he heard David’s request, he completely snubbed him. Nabal acted as if he didn’t know who David was, and even went as far as to insult David, suggesting that he might have been a runaway servant (vv.10-11).
David was ticked off when he learned of Nabal’s reply. He ordered his men to get their swords as he strapped on his own. Armed and angry, he and 400 of his men set out to take by force what they needed from Nabal (vv.12-13).
When Nabal’s wife, Abigail, learned what her husband had said, she knew big trouble was brewing. So she immediately gathered a bunch of supplies and rode out to meet the incensed David (vv.20-22). She pleaded with David to overlook her husband’s foolishness and to avoid burdening his conscience with “needless bloodshed” (vv.23-31). David praised Abigail for her good judgment and called off the attack (vv.32-35). Were it not for her brave and wise intervention, he would have made a costly mistake.
Maybe you’re considering lashing out at someone who has wronged you? Don’t react rashly and make a costly mistake. Take Abigail’s wise advice to heart and let God deal with the one who has offended you (Romans 12:19-21).

VERSE OF THE DAY
You know that is was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.
1 Peter 1:18-19
New International Version
THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...
If value is determined by price, we are incredibly valuable. God took the most precious treasure of heaven to buy us out of sin and death and adopt us into his family. Silver and gold pale in comparison to that value.
MY PRAYER...
Holy God, may I live today constantly aware of my inestimable value to you. May my words, thoughts and actions be permeated with a sense of worth. Not so that I may seem important but so that I may live in holiness and honor to your precious gift to me. Through him I pray. Amen.

Learning From Mistakes

The Bible is not a written record of perfect people (except for Jesus, of course). From beginning to end, God’s Word points out in painful detail the mistakes made by its characters.
Adam and Eve failed to obey God’s specific restrictions (Gen. 2:15-17; 3:1-7). Abram lied about his relationship to Sarai (Gen. 12:10-20). Moses grew angry and struck the rock in disobedience to God (Num. 20:7-12). David committed adultery and murder (2 Sam. 11-12). Solomon started out well but turned from God for a time (1 Ki. 3:5-9;11:1-43). Peter denied knowing Jesus (Mt. 26:69-75).
The Bible’s honest portrayal of the troubles that its characters brought upon themselves and others reminds me of what humorist Sam Levenson once said: “You must learn from the mistakes of others. You can’t possibly live long enough to make them all yourself.”
It is for our instruction that the Bible records the sinful actions of many of its key figures. The old saying “Those who don’t learn from history are bound to repeat it” is true here as well. As we see the errors made by biblical characters, we can ask the Lord to protect us from making similar mistakes.
The Bible is filled with example and teachingOn how to avoid all the pitfalls of sin;And if we will learn from its people and precepts,The struggles and battles of life we can win.  —Hess
To the wise, the word is sufficient.
VERSE OF THE DAY
It is written, "As surely as I live," says the Lord, "every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God."
Romans 14:11
New International Version
THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...
"Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven." "Maranatha! Come Lord Jesus!" Yes, every knee will bow. But ours already do. We live in anticipation of the day when all peoples will bow before our King. Until that day, let's do all we can to make sure they do so in joy and not on that day in fear!
MY PRAYER...
Father, I thank you for saving me. May my anticipation of the day of Jesus' victory move me to be your agent of reconciliation so others are ready for that day and will welcome it with joy. Gives me eyes to see those who need to come to Jesus today. Through him I pray. Amen.

Your POWER Within

THE POWER OF THE BELIEVER
 John 8:32
“You shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free”
When I was a boy on the farm, my dad, my brother and I would visit our neighbor's farm to share produce and labor. The neighbor had a yappy little dog that scared the socks off me. When it came barking around the corner, my dad and brother stood their ground, but I ran. Guess who the dog chased! I escaped to the top of our pickup truck while the little dog yapped at me from the ground.
Everyone except me could see that the little dog had no power over me except what I gave it. Furthermore, it had no inherent power to throw me up on the pickup; it was my belief that put me up there. That dog controlled me by using my mind, my emotions, my will, and my muscles, all of which were motivated by fear. Finally I gathered up my courage, jumped off the pickup, and kicked a small rock at the mutt. Lo and behold, it ran!
Satan is like that yappy little dog: deceiving people into fearing him more than God. His power is in the lie. He is the father of lies (John 8:44) who deceives the whole world (Revelation 12:9), and consequently the whole world is under the influence of the evil one (1 John 5:19). He can do nothing about your position in Christ, but if he can deceive you into believing his lies about you and God, you will spend a lot of time on top of the pickup truck! You don't have to outshout him or outmuscle him to be free of his influence. You just have to out truth him. Believe, declare, and act upon the truth of God's Word, and you will thwart Satan's strategy.
I have learned from the Scriptures and my experience that truth is the liberating agent. The power of Satan is in the lie, and the power of the believer is in knowing the truth. We are to pursue truth, not power.
Prayer:
Father God, when Satan is badgering and confusing me, remind me that Your Holy Spirit within me is greater than all the evil around me.

Save your life

Jesus said to them all: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.
Luke 9:23-24
New International Version
THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...
"I've just got to find myself." Won't ever happen. We do not "find ourselves, our life" by pursuing it. We find it by losing it to something or someone greater than ourselves. We find our life be losing it to Jesus and the work of his Kingdom.
MY PRAYER...
Master and Maker of all that lives and breathes, take my life and every breath and use it for your glory. May my words and actions this day be pleasing to you. Through Jesus I offer you this prayer and praise. Amen.
HE IS A REWARDER
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE
“And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him”
(Hebrews 11:6, NIV)
TODAY’S WORD
Do you see God as a rewarder today? Notice this verse doesn’t say that God rewards those who “deserve” it or have “earned” it. It doesn’t say that God rewards those who act perfectly and never make mistakes. No, God’s blessing isn’t based on our performance, it’s based on our faith — our belief in Him and His goodness. In fact, one verse says that He longs to be good to those who are looking for His goodness!
I encourage you today to spend some time meditating on His goodness and dwelling on His faithfulness. Look for Him and expect Him to act. Spend some time reading the Psalms and begin to praise and thank Him for all He is doing. Open your eyes of faith and see all of the wonderful things He has prepared for you. Let His Word shape your thoughts, and remember He is a rewarder! He wants to bless you today because you earnestly seek after Him!
A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father God, thank You for Your Word which fills my heart and mind with faith. I believe that You are good and that You are a rewarder. I choose to put my trust in You knowing that You have blessings in store for my future in Jesus’ name. Amen.

A Great Sacrifice

Sacrifice of God
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness, by his wounds you have been healed.
Ephesians 1:7
New International Version
THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...
He bore our sins. He didn't just carry them, he suffered the penalty we deserved. His anguish was our healing, his suffering our righteousness. How can we ever think of going back to sin after he suffered so much to bear their penalty?
MY PRAYER...
Holy God, how you could stand to see your precious Son under the weight of my sin, all sin, I will never understand. Thank you for such a great love and for being so great a God. There is none who can be compared to you, O God. Your greatness is beyond imagining and your love beyond my dreams. I will live this day to your glory through him who bore my sin so I could be your child. Amen.
IT IS FINISHED
TODAY'S SCRIPTURE
"I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns"
(Philippians 1:6, NLT)
TODAY'S WORD
The last thing Jesus said on the cross was, "It is finished." At that moment, it certainly looked like the end. It looked like it was over. But I believe that wasn't just a statement of fact, it was a statement of faith. He was saying to Father God, "I've done My part. I've fulfilled My destiny. Now, I've got total trust and confidence in You that You are going to finish what You started through Me." Even though it looked like the end, in reality, it was only the beginning.
Remember, when things look dark in your own life, dare to make a declaration of faith and say, "It is finished." What you're really saying is, "God, I know You are going to finish what You've begun in my life. You are going to turn things around.
I know that You are giving me the breaks that I need. Let Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven!" Keep looking with your eyes of faith knowing that He is faithful, and He will finish what He's started in you!
A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Father in heaven, thank You for Your faithfulness in my life. I thank You that You will complete what You've started in my life. Today I choose to put my trust and hope in You knowing that You are working behind the scenes to bring victory to every area of my life in Jesus' name. Amen!

Demonstration of Love

At just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 5:6-8
New International Version
THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY'S VERSE...
Jesus died for us, but not because he had some high hopes for who we are or what we would be. No, he died for us because he knew exactly who we are and what we would be without him. But praise be to God, we are now God's righteousness because he took our sin and gave us God's grace (2 Corinthians 5:17-21).
MY PRAYER...
Holy God, thank you for Jesus, my Savior. No words are adequate to express my love and devotion to you for such an incredible gift! Through him I give and live my thanks to you. Amen.
VICTORY OVER ALL
TODAY'S SCRIPTURE
"But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ"
(Romans 8:11, AMP)
TODAY'S WORD
This coming weekend, we will celebrate the resurrection of our precious Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. So much happened at Calvary's cross over two thousand years ago; but ultimately, because of Jesus, we can celebrate victory! Jesus overcame sin and death so that we can have abundant life. Because of Jesus, we have total victory over anything that would try to hold us back in this life!
No matter what stronghold, sin, addiction or bondage has held you captive in the past, today you can be free. When you receive Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, you receive His power. Sin can't hold you back any longer because when the Son sets you free, you are free indeed! (See John 8:36.) It all starts by believing and receiving this promise and then building faith by hearing the Word of God.
Today, if you don't know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, there's no better time to get on the road to victory! Receive Him, receive the truth, and let it transform every area of your life!
A PRAYER FOR TODAY
Heavenly Father, thank You for giving me victory! Thank You for Your Word which is life and healing water to my soul. I choose to set my heart and thoughts on You, knowing that You are empowering me to overcome in every area of my life in Jesus' name. Amen!
